Central Asia is a mineral-rich region, which has been confronted with an increasing number of investment arbitrations related to the mining sector over the past two decades. The Central Asian region is comprised of five republics of the former Soviet Union, namely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
The Mining industry plays an important role in the development of Central Asian countries. Kazakhstan’s mining activities make up more than 60% of the mining industry in Central Asia. Other countries with prominent mining production are Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan with 58% and 12.4% respectively.

The largest reserves are found in Siberia, the Central Asian republics, India, and especially China; Indonesia, Japan, and North Korea have smaller but nevertheless economically important reserves.
Central Asia served as an important source for uranium in the former Soviet Union. A large amount of radioactively contaminated material was placed in mining waste dumps and tailing sites. The contaminated material is a threat to the environment and the health of the population.
